To Be or Not To Be

Lately we’ve been researching  different cookie decorating options. Garnish cookies are very popular but most of them are flavorless sugar cookie cutouts  slathered in a powdered sugar glaze with artificial coloring.  Sure Billy Crystal’s character from  Saturday Night Live  summed up our American mantra of “it’s better to look good than feel good”……..BUT …..

Do you know  Red Dye 40 is made from petroleum distillates or coal tars?  FD&C Yellow #5 is actually a synthetic compound called tartrazine. Have you ever asked for a dessert with extra tar?  If you are going to enjoy a cookie why waste your hard earned money on cardboard cutouts topped with sugary tartrazine?

I’ll admit, we did try an all natural icing recipe for some of our current flavors.  Even a little bit of icing overpowered the flavor of our decadent desserts. I was determined to find a product improvement idea until I received a very special order. A customer called and said she was on her way to the store to purchase a cake for a birthday party, but knew the “birthday girl”  doesn’t like store bought desserts. I told her our gourmet cookies have been used for birthday parties. She loved the idea and purchased a few dozen……for Coco the horse.

Happy Birthday Coco! Thank you for reminding us to keep our quality products unique.  We choose “Not To Be” like everyone else!

Has this ever happened to you?

I received a strange email with the subject line “This is BooShaw!!” It was a scathing email accusing us of using someone’s catchphrase. Suddenly I was living a version of “Bizzaro Jerry” from Seinfeld. I’ll admit this is an unusual coincidence, but there’s nothing new under the sun.

Boo-Shaw is a combination of our family name.

We’re busy perfecting our Sugar Free Lemon Zest cookies. Plus we’re designing a Key Lime Pie cookie sweetened with coconut sugar to provide desserts for the low carb diet, low sugar diet, and even the “see food diet.”

Who has the time to defend their company name?
I offered our products to promote the other BooShaw and informed him (or her) Boo-Shaw Bakery is a registered trademark.

The USPTO trademark process is painful but necessary. Plus you can save money by doing it yourself online without an attorney.
The other BooShaw never responded to my email. I would at least like to thank him for promoting us 🙂

Did the Grinch really steal Christmas?

I heard an adorable story of a young child calling the police to stop the Grinch from stealing Christmas. It made me wonder if this was true.

As a member of Generation X, I have fond memories of Joyful movies, finding Christmas gift ideas for loved ones, singing songs, and enjoying holiday cheer in our city.  Frankly it didn’t matter if a person loved Jesus. Everyone seemed to have a sense of Kindness and Hope during the holiday season.

It was a much needed break from our busy lives.

Today it seems like the primary focus is black Friday deals. People are trading a happy Thanksgiving for 85% off on laptops. Everyone loves a good deal, but what happened to Peace on earth and good will toward men (and women)? What happened to celebrating good times with family and friends?

I thought black Friday is how the Grinch stole Christmas.  According to the Balance, black Friday started in the 1960’s.

Maybe I’m just getting older. Here’s what I do know: We will always be the honest company that will not bombard people with spam emails. We will not become a Grinch and steal your Christmas.  If you need personal creations for special occasions, feel free to contact us.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Here’s something you may not know…..

I attempted to try an advertising strategy by entering our gourmet cookies in a contest.  Why not……Our blending process is so unique its patent published.  There are several contests available. However, I couldn’t find one contest that allowed contestants to submit their cookies without the blending process. Plus they ban business owners. Why would these companies need to know how each recipe was created? Why would they only allow non-business owners?

I’ll tell you why……..It’s because they could legally make millions from the recipes. It’s upsetting to think about people getting bamboozled into handing over their Nana’s  family recipes. Sure these companies offer cash prizes, but if the recipe is good enough to win……..why not sell it yourself?

Mandorla Dolce

So I went back to the affordable Fiverr. I found an advertiser named DTongSports. I purchased his services and uploaded our information. I tried to come up with a “jazzy” advertising blurb, but it wasn’t great. DTong was thoughtful enough to  help.  He not only wrote a better advertisement, he gave us more than what we purchased. There are still good people in the business world. DTong is certainly one of them.

We may not be able to gain instant exposure by winning a cookie contest, but we can connect with other good people along this journey.

After all, isn’t that what life is all about?

Have you purchased liquid gold for the holiday season?

The other day I was ordering ingredients for the bakery. Since I’m a “one stop shop” kind of woman, I buy from the same suppliers. I’ll admit it’s a little bit like Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day but it saves time.

We purchase most of our all natural extracts from Olivenation. However  vanilla extract was cheaper with a different supplier.  I knew about the shortage of vanilla, but this supplier still sold a 16oz bottle for $8……..until this month! An 8oz bottle is now $20. I don’t know if I was more upset about the price increase or my tainted shopping routine. It felt like buying liquid gold.

Our gourmet cookies are original, affordable, and all natural.  How are we supposed to keep our products affordable?

According to Eater, most small businesses are absorbing the cost too. It’s nice to know we’re not the only ones who care about people more than money.  So we will continue to purchase the “liquid gold,” keep our products affordable, pray for a change, and remain Thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!
