Did you know there was a day called, “National Good Neighbor Day?” That’s right!! It is celebrated each year on September 28. According to Wikipedia.org, this day was first officially recognized in 1970: National Good Neighbor Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on September 28. In the early 1970s, Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana created National Good Neighbor Day as a day to connect with and recognize the importance of strong leaders. On September 22, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4601 establishing September 24, 1978 as National Good Neighbor Day, stating that it should be observed “with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” . . .

Do you have children currently in summer camp or after-school camps during the school year? Maybe they are your own kids or your grandchildren or nephews and nieces? Or maybe you just know some friends and neighbors with children in camp. . . Next week, June 26 through June 30 is National Boys & Girls Clubs Week! This is something we can all take some time to learn about and see if there is any way we can join or help out! Even if they are not our own children, these youngsters are part of everyone’s future!

Here at Boo-Shaw Bakery, we often try to help others, sometimes no matter what!!! This sweet child is a grand-baby of a special friend of ours. Her name is Alohi, which is Hawaiian for Shining, Brilliant. This young, shining light is currently in need of a kidney transplant. My friend is working with Children’s Organ Transplant Association to help raise the funds.

If you’ve believed in paying back kindness all your life, allow us to introduce you to a more refined and helpful initiative — paying kindness forward! This day is celebrated in over 80 countries, encouraging us to collectively perform random acts of kindness in a bid to pay forward some of the kindness we may have been shown in the past.

This day should be recognized and understood by everyone! Take a few moments to read and learn about ‘PayDay It Forward day.’ This is not the well-known ‘pay it forward’ technique where you cover the beverage of the car behind you in a fast food drive through, this day is so much more! March 29 is observed across the world as an opportunity to be kind to young black men and support them.
